Experienced clinical psychologist

Extensive experience working in the NHS & privately since qualifying from The University of Glasgow in the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2004. Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Supporting parents & families is at the heart of what I do

I provide therapy for children, young people and adults, with a particular specialism in working with parents. I help families understand and respond to each other's emotional worlds.

Evidence-based therapy approaches tailored to you

Drawing on a range of psychological models and therapies, I build a plan around what you're specifically struggling with. I don't offer standard solutions.

When being a parent feels overwhelming, you don't have to figure it out alone

Hello, I'm

DrKatieSmith-Signature.png

Most parents I speak to aren't looking for someone to tell them what they're doing wrong. They're looking for help understanding what's happening with their child, their family, and often themselves. That's exactly what I do.

As well as being a parenting expert, I also work with children, young people and adults across the West of Scotland. From anxiety and low mood to trauma, chronic illness and life transitions, my approach will be tailored to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm not sure if what I'm dealing with is serious enough to need a psychologist. How do I know if I should get in touch?

If something is making daily life harder - for you, your child, or your family - it's worth talking about. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy for families or individuals. Many of the people I work with simply feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to turn. If you’re not sure, book a free 15-minute call and we can chat about what you are looking for help with, if I can help or direct you to someone who can.

What happens in the first therapy session?

The first session is an initial assessment. A chance for me to listen and understand what's been going on for you. I'll ask questions to build a picture of your situation, and together we'll start to make sense of what's happening and what might help. It's also a chance for you to get a feel for how I work and decide if you'd like to continue.

What is the free 15-minute call, and what should I expect?

The free introductory call is a relaxed, no-obligation conversation - usually by phone. It's a chance for you to tell me a little about what's brought you here, ask any questions you have, and get a sense of whether I'm the right fit for you. There's no pressure to commit to anything. If we both feel it's a good match, we'll arrange an initial assessment from there.

How much do sessions cost, and do you offer any lower-cost options?

A 50-minute session is £130. If you're interested in the Raising Minds Parent Group, the full six-session programme is £495 - significantly less per session than individual therapy, and there is some flexibility around spreading the cost. I'm happy to discuss what works for you.
