Therapy For Children & Young People

It's not always easy to know whether what your child is going through is a phase, or something that needs more support. I work with children and young people to help them make sense of what they're feeling, and find their way through it.

Therapy For Your Child

My approach to helping young people

Children and young people don't always have the words for what they're feeling. Sometimes it shows up as anxiety or low mood, sometimes as anger, withdrawal or behaviour that's hard to be around. They need help making sense of their emotional world and to know there is nothing wrong with them, they are simply a human in development (and you are a parent in development!). Therapy isn't just to ease things today. It's to give your child the emotional skills and resilience that

I work systemically, which means I understand your child in the context of the whole system they are part of. This may also mean working or liaising with parents, other family and school to see how they can help.

Sessions are face-to-face, 50 minutes, and built entirely around your child and what they need.

What I can help children and young people with

Parents who come to me are often worried about a child who has changed, who seems more anxious, more withdrawn, or more unlike themselves than usual. You might have tried talking to them and hit a wall, or feel like you're walking on eggshells at home. You don't need to wait until things reach a breaking point before reaching out.

I'm a clinical psychologist experienced in child and adolescent mental health

I commonly work with children and young people experiencing:

  • Anxiety, low mood, anger or difficult behaviour

  • Emotional dysregulation and meltdowns

  • Self-harm, withdrawal or low self-esteem

  • Developmental difficulties or neurodiverse presentations

  • The impact of trauma, family breakdown, illness or injury

If something feels hard at home, that's enough of a reason to reach out.

What to expect from therapy sessions for your child

The first step is a free 15-minute telephone call, where you can ask questions and get a sense of whether working with me feels right.

Next comes an initial assessment, which always involves you as parents or carers. This helps me build a fuller picture before we agree the best way to work, whether that's seeing your child individually, together with you, or a combination of both.

Some young people need a few sessions, others benefit from working together over a longer period. We move at a pace that suits your child.

A tailored therapeutic approach, built around your child

From an assessment, which would include talking to parents and school if relevant, I develop an understanding of your child and what therapeutic approach would be most beneficial. This will most likely be a combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR).

More importantly, I'll choose a custom approach that combines these methods in a way that fits your child's age, temperament, and what they're finding most difficult right now.

A calmer, more connected home

When a child learns to understand and manage their emotions, the whole family feels it. Parents often notice less conflict, more connection, and a calmer home.
